You don't need a degree in thermal dynamics to know if your house violates the current Texas energy codes. All it takes is a ladder, a flashlight, and a measuring tape.

The Simple Math of Depth

Blown-in fiberglass yields approximately R-2.5 per inch. Texas code requires R-38 minimum.

38 ÷ 2.5 = 15.2 Inches

The 3-Step Audit

  • 1
    Pop the Hatch safely

Ensure you do not step off the rafters or you will crash through the ceiling drywall. Go up early in the morning before the house heats up.

  • 2
    Check Joist Visibility

Standard ceiling framing joists are usually 2x6 or 2x8 wood planks (roughly 6-8 inches high). If you can clearly see the tops of the wood joists in your attic, your insulation is well under 8 inches deep (R-20). You are failing code.

  • 3
    Measure the Depth

In 3 separate locations, push a tape measure through the fluff until it hits the hard decking. If the average is under 15 inches, you need a top-off.

Stop Reading. Start Fixing.

Your house won't fix its own thermal leaks. Schedule a complimentary diagnostic sweep and see exactly where your HVAC is bleeding cash.
